I met my current partner as the Front of House at Rebel Bread two years ago. Since then, I have visited frequently, watching her build and maintain a community presence in this space, while the business scales from wholesale-only to the dynamic Cafe it has become. I continue to meet folks gathered here for commune, for inspiration, and nourishment. More recently, we have been thrilled to welcome the new Mother Other Cafe as a neighbor, strengthening a sense of LGBTQ pride and creativity in the area. It would be an honor to contribute my skills to the developing the vibrancy of this public space.

Having lived 10 years in Oakland / San Francisco California, I appreciate the potential for design to humanize and engage folks in a public space. To design for the public is to be in service of all who will share in the experience—a responsibility I maintain deep respect for. Since moving to Denver in 2020, and going full-time freelance in 2023, my identity as a Designer and Creative Professional has become intertwined with this city. My time here has included buying my first home, living out of state from my family for the first time, and committing to a co-habitating romantic relationship for the first time. It would be deeply meaningful to me to create a mural here, as I have done in San Francisco.

While at first appearing mysterious and tucked away, I have come to appreciate the peaceful quality of this unique oasis off Broadway. How exciting to dream of this hidden corner off Broadway blooming into a more vibrantly-expressed destination—one that inspires employees and patrons alike, invites the public to share in a world of possibility, and elevates Denver’s reputation as a thoughtful, design-forward city.

Denver’s Design District serves a growing population of Business owners, Design Consultants, Manufacturing Partners, and Luxury Clients. These folks will be the primary audience for the work.

My approach to this opportunity would draw from the linear typographic style established in the “Play” mural I created for Public Recreation. This strategy will be effective for the irregular and curving spaces, because the pattern is infinitely scalable across any surface or shape, while clearly referring back to the main section. While I would be interested to explore the impact of color (perhaps blue / green / yellow to mirror sky / trees / Bayer’s work), the Black and White color scheme could also work well, and might be the easiest for managing any touch-ups or vandalism, if that is a concern.

Furthermore, the flexibility of this system offers an opportunity to say something unique. Given the length of the space, this could be anything from “Welcome” to “Denver Design District” to a longer quote from Bayer or another Designer on the power of space, scale, intention, tessellation, mathematical and humanist principles, etc.

The graphic backdrop would be an excellent photo / video opportunity for visitors to collaborate in the evangelization and celebration of the District.
